Far from being a style for schoolgirls, braids exploded on to the catwalks for spring summer, proving they’re this season’s alternative to the ponytail. First up we saw sporty, 70s versions at Alexander Wang – where hair stylist  teased strands out of a fat, textured braid that snaked down models’ shoulders.
This dishevelled feel continued at Margaret Howell where plaits were relaxed and beachy and laden with salt spray as if the girls had spent a day on the beach. At Giambattista Valli they were wispy and sat high at the crown while at Antonio Marras, small fishtail plaits weaved in and out of loose, airy lengths. Long and thin braids were the order of the day at Miu Miu and Roberto Cavalli while over at Alexander McQueen tiny corn-row plaits were braided tight to the head to create fossil-inspired sculptures.
